Since 2019, Gregg Smart has been privately investing through Symphony Investment Holdings which seeks compelling opportunities primarily in the Southeast. From 1999 until 2024 he was a general partner of Fenway Partners LLC, a middle market-focused private equity firm with investments in distribution, logistics, light manufacturing and consumer-facing markets. His role encompassed deal origination and structuring, portfolio oversight, management company administration and capital-raising. In this capacity he has served as a board director on a number of private companies.
From 1986 to 1999, he was an investment banker with Merrill Lynch & Co. in New York City. During that time he worked in leveraged finance, corporate finance, and as a Managing Director in relationship coverage of private equity clients. His transaction experience covered many industries, debt and equity capital solutions, and advisory assignments. Prior to business school he worked for the former First Union National Bank (now Wachovia) in Charlotte, NC as a national loan officer.
He is a 1986 graduate of The Wharton School of Business, University of Pennsylvania, and a 1981 graduate of Davidson College with a B.A. in Economics.
